The cooks

Three panels per person, and they are never merged, because they are three different strengths of claim — always in that order, strongest first. Right now leads with evidence: a fresh commit means someone is at the stove, whatever the schedule says, and only when the log has gone quiet does it fall back to the declared timetable — which the log then audits in public underneath. Read from the log is counted out of git and cannot be argued with. Says they are on is a sentence a human wrote about themselves on a date, which starts wearing a warning after a fortnight.

Celebration — and the everyday word rather than the ceremonial one, because utsav is a festival and this list also holds a boy’s birthday and the day a cat came home. The one list on this page with nothing counted in it. Every other figure here is read out of the commit log; these are declared — somebody typed them in, because a birthday is not a commit and a festival never will be. A birthday shows a month and a day and no year, and appears only if that person set one; nobody gets a guessed date. Festival dates are typed in per year rather than worked out, because Diwali and Eid move — so when one falls out of date the list says so instead of quietly dropping it.

What we have actually celebrated

The list above is a forecast; this is the record. Not all of it is festivals: an ordinary hour nobody owed the calendar is worth keeping too, and a kitchen that marks only the big days misses most of what it is actually like. The pictures and the one clip are Ghibli-style renderings rather than photographs — which is still a likeness, so everyone in one is somebody who agreed to be on a page anybody can open. The clip has sound and does not start on its own.

  No festival, nobody's birthday, nothing owed to the calendar — which is the whole point of it. Vivaan on the recliner with his tablet and Cuddles asleep on his lap under the orange blanket, and nowhere either of them had to be. Fursat is the everyday word for exactly that: not a holiday, not a celebration, just the hour with nothing in it. Worth recording here because a kitchen that only marks the big days misses most of what it is actually like.

  Not really a birthday. Cuddles nearly did not make it and then came home, so she got a cake — an ice-cream cupcake she was not allowed to eat — and the day counts as one. Her day is the 26th; it was marked on the 28th, alongside Nivin's, because that is when everyone was in the same room.
